The parents of Handler were both householders. Her father was an auto dealer. Her mother was an German immigrant who came to the United States in 1958. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 1989. Her father was Jewish as was her mother, and she raised within Reform Judaism. Handler was born in a lovely neighborhood and she had a very pleasant childhood. When she was 19 She moved from the city of Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in acting. Handler employed as an actor to earn a living for her family. However, when she was age 21, Handler decided to pursue stand-up comedy full time, because she realized her story telling skills. Her career began as an actress in the cast that included all females in the Oxygen channel's reality television series Girls behaving poorly. It was a combination of hidden cameras as well as humorous jokes. The show was broadcast from 2002 to2005. The handler then began appearing on other TV shows such as Weekends at the D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler has also worked as the correspondent of The Tonight Show. Handler achieved her first big break in 2006 by hosting her E! show. Named The Chelsea Handler show. The show lasted over two years.
